Ukhrul district, Administrative district in Manipur, India
Ukhrul is a district in the mountains of northeastern India, where valleys and peaks spread across the landscape. Dense forests cover the slopes and ridges, creating a heavily forested terrain throughout the region.
Botanist Frank Kingdon Ward traveled to the area in 1948 and discovered the rare Shirui Lily growing on the slopes. This find led to the flower later being chosen as Manipur's official state flower.
The Tangkhul Naga people live throughout this region and shape daily life through their festivals and community gatherings. Visitors can experience these traditions firsthand by spending time in local villages and joining seasonal celebrations.
The district is reached by roads connecting it to other parts of Manipur and neighboring states. Ukhrul town serves as the administrative center and offers basic accommodation for visitors.
The Shirui Lily thrives only under the specific conditions found on the slopes of Shirui Peak. This rare flower is found nowhere else in the world, making the location botanically significant.
