South Goa District, Administrative district in Goa, India
South Goa District occupies the southern portion of Goa state, with Margao serving as its capital and second largest city after Vasco da Gama.
The region traces its administrative origins to Portuguese colonial rule, which lasted until 1961 when Goa was integrated into the Indian Union.
The district contains numerous Portuguese-era churches, Hindu temples, and colonial mansions, reflecting the fusion of Indian and European architectural styles.
The Madgaon Railway Station connects South Goa to major Indian cities, while Dabolim Airport provides air access 23 kilometers from Margao.
The district includes several natural anchorages along its coastline, including Mormugao Harbor, recognized as one of India's finest natural ports.
