The Bhopal disaster, also referred to as the Bhopal gas tragedy, was a gas leak incident on the night of 2–3 December 1984 at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India.
It is considered among the world's worst industrial disasters. Over 500,000 people were exposed to methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas.
Bhopal disaster remains a key study event in issues related to engineering ethics and moral responsibilities of multinational corporations.
The affected areas still struggle with long-term health effects and polluted environment even decades after the accident.
The Bhopal incident was one of the few industrial accidents to result in a permanent exclusion zone being designated.
