Gokarna, Temple town in Karnataka, India
Gokarna is a coastal town in Uttara Kannada District in Karnataka that stretches along the Arabian Sea between two rivers. The settlement consists of an old core with narrow lanes and several beaches separated by rocks and trails.
The temples were probably built during the 4th century under the rule of the Kadamba dynasty. Later, the place became a destination for pilgrims from different parts of India who traveled here to participate in religious ceremonies.
Pilgrims and visitors mingle between the temples and street vendors who offer flowers and incense sticks. Many travelers spend months here instead of days, living in simple huts near the shore.
Most beaches lie outside the center and can be reached on foot via trails or by boat. Those who set out early in the morning find quieter paths and milder temperatures.
A small cave near the main temple carries the inscription that Ravana from the Ramayana epic performed an important offering here. Visitors climb through a narrow entrance to see this spot.
