Patiala district, Administrative district in Punjab, India
Patiala district is an administrative region in southeastern Punjab with agricultural fields, rural settlements, and the city of Patiala serving as its main hub. The territory is crisscrossed by roads and railways that connect its communities together.
The district grew from the former Patiala State, founded in 1763 by Sikh leader Ala Singh who built the Qila Mubarak fortress to establish his power. This founding shaped the region as an important center over the following centuries.
The area is known for the Patiala gharana, a classical music tradition with roots here that musicians and students continue to practice today. Artisans still craft traditional Patiala turbans and distinctive clothing styles that you can see worn around town and sold at local markets.
The area is well connected by a railway junction and extensive road network linking it to major neighboring cities. Visitors will find good transportation options to reach Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Delhi from here.
The Kali Devi Temple was built in 1936 with the original purpose of protecting the area from flooding. It remains an important place of worship where annual ceremonies still take place today.
