Burail Fort, Mughal fortification in Sector 45, Chandigarh, India
Burail Fort is a Mughal fortification in Chandigarh with pillar remnants visible on its northeast, northwest, and southwest sides. The entire structure was built using small Nanakshahi bricks, which form the core of what survives today.
The fort was built during the Mughal period and remained under Mughal Faujdar control until 1712, when Banda Singh Bahadur led an uprising. This rebellion marked a turning point in the control of the fort and surrounding region.
The Shahidi Qila Sahib Gurudwara on the grounds honors Sikh warriors who resisted Mughal rule in this region. The site draws visitors and pilgrims who come to pay respects to those who fought here.
The site is easily accessible and located within a designated city sector with clear street access. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear, as the ruins sit on uneven ground and some areas are less stable for walking.
This site is among the oldest surviving structures in Chandigarh, with original Mughal-era defensive design that has endured for centuries. Despite its age and historical importance, it remains an overlooked spot within the modern city.
