Sukhna Lake Wildlife Sanctuary, Protected wildlife area in Chandigarh, India.
Sukhna Lake Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in the foothills of the Shivalik Hills with forests, shrublands, and multiple water bodies. The landscape combines different habitats with varied vegetation across roughly 2600 hectares.
The sanctuary was established in 1986 and grew from conservation efforts around Sukhna Lake, which was created in 1958 through stream diversion. The protection of both the lake and surrounding lands formed the foundation of what exists today.
The sanctuary serves as a space where visitors observe local wildlife through guided tours and nature walks. People come here to learn about forest birds and the natural habitats that define the region.
Visits are possible at the Kansal and Nepli gates and run from early morning until dusk. Daily visitor numbers are limited, so arriving early helps you experience the area with fewer people around.
The area holds one of India's largest sambar deer populations and shelters over 150 bird species. This bird diversity shifts with the seasons, with some species appearing only during particular months.
