Rock Garden of Chandigarh, Sculpture garden in Chandigarh, India.
The Rock Garden of Chandigarh is a sculpture garden in Chandigarh, India, where people walk among concrete figures, mosaics, and narrow paths. The paths wind through courtyards, over small waterfalls, and beneath passageways lined with ceramic fragments.
Nek Chand Saini began building secretly in 1957, shaping figures from construction debris on illegally used land over many years. When city officials discovered the site in 1975, authorities decided to preserve the project and open it to the public.
The name honors Nek Chand Saini, who collected debris from urban construction and shaped thousands of figures from it. Visitors today see sculptures made from broken ceramic bowls, old bottles, and electrical waste, arranged in groups across the entire site.
The garden lies near Sector 1 of Chandigarh and you reach it via Uttar Marg, which leads directly to the main entrance. Sturdy footwear is advisable as the paths are narrow and sometimes uneven, with steps and staircases to climb.
A small museum hall houses around 200 hand-sewn rag dolls that Nek Chand created in the 1970s from textile scraps. The dolls stand in display cases and show different faces and costumes reminiscent of Indian village scenes.
