Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Technical university in Mesra, India
Birla Institute of Technology is a technical university in Mesra, Jharkhand, covering a large campus with lecture halls and research buildings. The separate faculties occupy several structures with laboratories and workshops, surrounded by green spaces and paths connecting the academic facilities.
Industrialist B. M. Birla founded the institution in the mid-1950s when eastern India had few technical colleges. The university grew steadily in its early decades and enrolled students first under Patna supervision, later under Ranchi.
Students from across the country move to Mesra and live together on the grounds for the duration of their studies. The hostels and shared spaces create small neighborhoods with playing fields and meeting places where students gather between lectures.
Visitors can enter through the main gate where an information desk provides directions and guidance to public events. Walking between buildings takes considerable time due to the distance, so plan for longer stays when attending lectures or exhibitions.
A center on campus supports students developing their own technology business ideas and provides funding and advice. The site also established the country's first academic department dedicated solely to space engineering in the mid-1960s.
