Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Institute of technology in Chennai, India
Indian Institute of Technology Madras is an institute of technology in Chennai spread across more than 250 hectares (about 620 acres). The compound includes teaching buildings, research laboratories, student housing and community facilities connected by paved paths and wooded areas.
The institution was established in 1959 with technical and financial support from West Germany as the third such facility in India. West German engineers and architects contributed to the construction of the first buildings and the equipping of laboratories.
The campus sits within a protected forest area that shelters wildlife such as deer and numerous bird species visible between buildings. This natural setting shapes daily life and creates an unusual environment for a technical institution.
The grounds are accessible through several gates, with the main gate located on Sardar Patel Road. Visitors should note this is a functioning academic campus where thousands of students and staff live and work throughout the academic year.
The institution operates its own internal bus system that links different areas of the large campus, running regularly between dormitories, academic buildings and community facilities. This transport service is necessary because walking distances between some buildings can reach several kilometers (a few miles).
