Srisailam Dam, Hydroelectric dam in Nandyal district, Andhra Pradesh, India
Srisailam Dam is a hydroelectric structure on the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh, built from concrete with a crest length of 512 meters. The installation rises 145 meters above its foundation and creates a large reservoir that winds through the surrounding hills.
Work on this project started in 1960 and continued for more than two decades until operations began in 1981. Completion marked an important milestone for power generation and irrigation in the region.
This structure sits below a sacred hill where pilgrims pass by daily on their way to the nearby temple. Many travelers take boat rides on the reservoir to experience both the water landscape and the religious site.
Visitors can reach the structure by road and find viewpoints to observe the installation and reservoir. The best time to visit is during morning hours when light is favorable and crowds are smaller.
The facility contains six reversible turbines that can pump water back into the reservoir during periods of low demand. This technology allows energy to be stored and released when needed.
