Deeg, Historical palace complex in Bharatpur district, India
Deeg is a town in Bharatpur district, India, known for its eighteenth-century palace compound. Stone walls enclose several separate residential buildings that connect through landscaped gardens and water basins.
The town became the residence of the Bharatpur principality in the early eighteenth century. A few years later, local rulers commissioned the fortifications and main palaces.
Each residence takes its name from Hindu deities or natural elements, with the Gopal residence honoring the god Krishna. Visitors today experience the connection between religious symbolism and courtly architecture in the preserved interior spaces.
The compound lies about 32 kilometers (20 miles) north of Bharatpur and is accessible by road. Entry is available daily, with early morning hours offering comfortable temperatures for walking around.
The garden grounds hold an elaborate fountain system activated twice yearly during regional festivals. On these days, the basins fill and jets spray water across the courtyards and terraces.
