Perinthalmanna, town in India
Perinthalmanna is a town in Malappuram district, Kerala, with narrow streets, traditional houses, and several temples and mosques spread across its center and outskirts. Hindu shrines such as the Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathy Temple and Angadipuram Thali Temple sit alongside mosques like Valiyangadi Mosque and Pattani Mosque.
The town was for centuries the center of Valluvanad, a kingdom ruled by local chiefs known as Valluvakonathiris, and served as a key trading point for the surrounding region. Later, during the East India Company era, it became home to some of the first administrative and educational institutions established in this part of Kerala.
The town reflects peaceful coexistence of different communities, with temples, mosques, and churches integrated into daily life. Religious festivals and temple fairs bring locals and visitors together, showing how traditions shape the rhythm of the place.
The town sits on a national road linking Palakkad and Kozhikode, and regular buses connect it to nearby cities throughout the day. The closest train station, in Angadipuram, is a short ride away, and Calicut International Airport serves those coming from further afield.
The nearby village of Elamkulam was the birthplace of EMS Namboodiripad, who led the first democratically elected communist government in the world in 1957. This connection gives the area a role in Kerala's broader political story that goes well beyond its size.
