Lansdowne is a cantonment town in Pauri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand, sitting at 1700 meters elevation among the forested slopes of the Himalayas. Dense oak and blue pine woods surround the settlement and give it a secluded character.
The British founded the place in 1887 and named it after the then viceroy to establish the headquarters of the Garhwal Rifles there. The troops replaced their previous camp in the lower plains with this location.
The Garhwal Rifles Regimental Museum houses uniforms, weapons and war diaries from past decades. Its rooms document the role of local units during different conflicts and preserve personal items belonging to soldiers.
Kotdwar lies 44 kilometers away and offers the nearest rail connection with regular bus services to town. The roads through the mountains follow steep bends and require extra care during wet weather.
The old cemetery at Kitchener Lines preserves gravestones of military personnel from the 1850s. The inscriptions tell of soldiers who served far from home and found their final rest here.
