Bargi Dam, Gravity dam in Jabalpur, India
Bargi Dam is a gravity structure crossing the Narmada River, holding back water for the region's farming and energy needs. The massive concrete barrier controls the river's flow and supplies water to a large area of agricultural land throughout the year.
Work on the dam started in the 1970s as part of a major river development project for the Narmada. The structure was completed years later, creating a major water storage system for the surrounding region.
Local fishing communities formed cooperative societies near the dam, establishing sustainable practices for their livelihood through organized fishing activities.
Visitors can view the dam from the surrounding areas and walk along the embankment to see the water body. The area is easily accessible, though it is best visited during or after the monsoon season when water levels are highest.
The reservoir created by the dam stretches 75 kilometers in length and 4.5 kilometers in width, forming a water body that covers 267.97 square kilometers.
