Chausath Yogini Temple, Bhedaghat

Chausath Yogini Temple at Bhedaghat is a circular structure with 81 individual shrines arranged around its perimeter, each containing stone-carved figures set into niches. The complex spans approximately 125 feet (38 meters) in diameter and sits on a hilltop overlooking the Narmada River.

The Kalachuri dynasty built this temple in the early 11th century as a place of worship. About 150 years later, royal patronage led to the addition of another shrine, showing the continued importance placed on this site.

The temple displays representations of female deities in stone, each adorned with detailed ornaments and symbols. Visitors can observe how these figures reflect the spiritual beliefs of the people who built and visited this place.

The temple sits on a hilltop and requires climbing stairs to reach the complex. The uphill walk can be tiring, especially in hot weather, so visitors should plan for the physical effort and bring water.

This temple deviates from standard design by housing 81 shrines instead of the customary 64 found elsewhere. This unusual number points to special significance this location held for the royal family who commissioned it.
