Arnala Fort, Portuguese coastal fort on Arnāla Island, India

The stone fortification stands on an island at the mouth of the Vaitarna River, featuring high walls and multiple defensive bastions along its perimeter.

Sultan Mahmud Begda constructed the initial structure in 1516, after which the Portuguese took control in 1530 and maintained it for two centuries.

The fort complex incorporates temples dedicated to Ambakeshwar and Devi Bhavani, along with the tombs of Hajjali and Shahali within its walls.

Visitors reach the fort by taking boats from Arnala Beach, with services operating during daylight hours from the mainland to the island.

The main entrance displays stone carvings of elephants and tigers, complemented by an octagonal freshwater reservoir system within the compound.
