Kohoj

Kohoj is a medieval fort perched on a plateau at 3,200 feet elevation with fortified walls, ancient water cisterns, and remains of military structures spread across the site. The layout reveals how defenders used the natural terrain to strengthen their position.

Portuguese forces captured this defensive structure from local rulers in the 16th century and built additional military installations. This takeover marked a shift in who controlled the fort and how it was used.

Two temples dedicated to Lord Shankar and Lord Hanuman stand on the fort grounds, showing how religious practices were woven into daily life here. These shrines reveal the spiritual importance this place held for communities across different periods.

Expect a 2-hour trek from Vaghote village with uneven paths and rocky sections, so wear sturdy footwear suited to steep terrain. Access can be affected by weather, so check local conditions before you visit.

Wind-eroded rock formations create striking shapes across the landscape, including one that resembles a human figure from certain angles. Most visitors miss this natural sculpture, which appears to shift and change depending on where you stand.
