Gambhirgad, Hill fort in Palghar district, India.
Gambhirgad is a stone fort in the hills of Palghar district, positioned at about 2250 feet above sea level. The site contains water storage cisterns, temple structures, and fortified bastions distributed across its grounds.
The fort was originally part of Jawhar State before its ruler Jayabha Mukne transferred control to a Warli chief. The government later took over the site and maintained it as a historic monument.
The fort displays building styles common to the region, using locally sourced stone and construction methods passed down through generations. Visitors can still see how the layout was designed for defense, with elevated positions that command views of the surroundings.
The route to the fort follows a medium difficulty trek starting from Patilpada village, taking around three hours to reach the main entrance. Visitors should bring comfortable walking shoes and enough water, as the path involves steep sections and rocky terrain.
From the fort, visitors can see the Arabian Sea to the west and the Sahyadri mountain range to the east on clear days, creating an unusual panorama. This double vista was strategically valuable for defenders and remains a special feature of visiting today.
