Shirgaon Fort, Coastal fort in Palghar district, India
Shirgaon Fort is a coastal defensive structure in Thane district with a rectangular layout featuring four octagonal bastions at the corners and one circular bastion at the entrance. The fortification follows a traditional design meant to control maritime access and protect the coastline.
The fort was built in the 13th century during Yadava dynasty rule to secure the coastal line. Over subsequent centuries it passed through the hands of different rulers who adapted and modified its structure for their own purposes.
The entrance features a memorial dedicated to Shivaji Maharaj, reflecting the fort's place in regional military tradition. This monument shows visitors how the site connects to local heritage and pride.
The fort can be reached by train to Palghar station, then by bus to the Masjid stop, followed by a short walk on foot. Visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and wear proper footwear when exploring the site.
The fort walls contain several unexplored caves that visitors can cautiously discover while walking the grounds. A historic cannon from earlier times still stands in the northwestern section of the citadel.
