Asheri Fort, Hill fort in Palghar district, India
Asheri Fort is a stone fort in Palghar district that sits on a hilltop at around 1,680 feet elevation with remains of defensive walls and water storage structures built into the steep slopes. The site spreads across multiple levels, with wall fragments that still show how the settlement was once organized.
The fort was initially controlled by the Shilahara dynasty before falling under Portuguese rule in 1556, then captured by Maratha forces in 1737. English control came in 1818, bringing further changes to the structure.
Local tribal residents from Khodkona village maintain deep connections to the fort through active participation in preservation efforts and traditional knowledge transfer.
The hike to the fort starts at Khodkona village and takes about an hour through forest paths, with local guides available if needed. The trail is steep and can become slippery after rain, so sturdy shoes and plenty of water are advisable.
Within the fort complex lie about 20 ancient cisterns and two large ponds, representing a sophisticated water management system from earlier periods. These water storage facilities show how residents once ensured supply and remain partially visible today.
