Peermade, Hill station and village in India
Peermade is a small hill town in Idukki district, situated in the Western Ghats surrounded by green hills and forests. The landscape features gentle slopes dotted with tea and spice plantations, small waterfalls, and forests that cover the highlands and provide work and food for local families.
Peermade was once a summer retreat for the kings of Travancore and European planters who built large estates here in colonial times. These historic bungalows and plantations remain today, marking the period when tea, coffee, and spices were cultivated across the hillsides.
The town's name comes from Saint Peer Muhammad, whose memory lives on in local stories and beliefs. Hindu and Christian festivals bring traditional celebrations to the streets, while the mix of Malayalam and Tamil speakers reflects the diverse communities working across the tea and spice estates.
The town is easily reached by road, located roughly 85 kilometers from Kottayam and 40 kilometers from Kumily, with scenic mountain and forest views along the drive. Small guesthouses and family-run hotels offer comfortable lodging, while nearby forest trails, waterfalls, and bird-watching opportunities are popular activities for visitors.
Echo Point is a small hill nearby where sound bounces off the rocks and visitors can hear their own voices reflecting back clearly and loudly. This natural acoustic phenomenon offers a surprising and playful experience that many travelers enjoy discovering during their time in the area.
