Palghar Gold Fields, Gold mining settlement in Palghar district, India
Palghar Gold Fields is a mining settlement in Palghar district in western Maharashtra, spread across hilly terrain. The site includes several shafts, access roads and smaller residential quarters scattered among the forested hills.
The settlement emerged during the industrial expansion of India, when companies searched for mineral deposits in Maharashtra. Workers from distant regions settled here and built housing near the extraction sites.
The settlement shows the mix of languages and cuisines that workers brought from several states when they arrived here. In the streets you hear dialects from Maharashtra, Jharkhand and other regions, while small food stalls serve dishes from different parts of the country.
Buses run regularly from Mumbai to Palghar, from where you can reach the area, and lodging is mainly found in Palghar town itself. The roads around the site are partly unpaved, so sturdy shoes are useful for visits to the outer zones.
Below the surface runs a network of tunnels connecting the different shafts, some of which are still in operation. Certain sections date from the earliest phases of the site and show the evolution of extraction tools over the decades.
