Ramalingeshwara group of temples, Avani, Temple complex in Avani, India.
The Ramalingeshwara temple complex holds four separate shrines, each dedicated to different deities and decorated with carved pillars and intricate stonework throughout. The structures display detailed carvings that appear on walls, doorways, and architectural elements across the site.
The temple complex was built in the 10th century under the Nolamba dynasty, a local ruling power in the region. Later kings from the Chola and Vijayanagara kingdoms left their own construction changes and additions to the site.
The four shrines are dedicated to Shiva Lingas associated with the brothers from the Ramayana epic. Visitors notice this connection to the ancient story as they move between each separate sanctuary.
The site is easy to walk around since the four shrines sit relatively close to each other. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection on sunny days.
The Lakshmanalingeshwara shrine features an unusual design where a single outer wall wraps around all the inner structures. This system was rare in Karnataka during that period and shows early innovation in temple design.
