Kotilingeshwara Temple, Hindu temple in Kammasandra, Karnataka, India
Kotilingeshwara Temple is a Hindu temple in Kammasandra in the state of Karnataka in India. The grounds stretch over several hectares and display countless stone objects arranged in rows and clusters that cover the entire area.
The complex emerged in the late 1980s on the initiative of a revered monk who wanted to create a place for intense worship of a specific deity. Over the decades, more and more devotional objects were added, donated by believers.
The name refers to the Sanskrit word for one million, reflecting the intention to gather a huge number of worship symbols. Pilgrims from across India come here to install their own small lingams as offerings and speak prayers.
The grounds can be explored on foot, with comfortable shoes recommended as the paths are long. The cooler months offer more pleasant conditions for a visit, as the heat can be intense during other seasons.
The central structure is among the tallest of its kind worldwide and towers over most surrounding buildings in the region. Believers often bring coconuts and flowers, which they place at specific spots, giving the site a lively character.
