Manipal is a university city in Udupi district, Karnataka, India, standing on a plateau at 73 meters elevation. From here, you can see the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats mountain range, while the city itself is marked by sprawling campus grounds, residential neighborhoods, and local shops.
The transformation of barren hills into an education city began in 1953, when Dr. T.M.A. Pai established Kasturba Medical College. Over the following decades, additional faculties and institutes grew, turning the place into a center for students from across India and abroad.
The name Manipal comes from Tulu words Manna Palla, referring to the central freshwater lake where residents practice boating activities. The local population speaks a mix of Kannada, Tulu, and other regional languages, heard in daily exchanges on the streets and markets of the city.
Mangalore International Airport, located 62 kilometers south, connects the city through regular flights to major Indian cities and Middle Eastern destinations. Due to heavy monsoon season between June and October, visitors should bring waterproof clothing and closed footwear, as streets can become slippery.
Annual precipitation reaches between 500 and 560 centimeters, ranking among the highest in all of India. During the rainy season, dry streams transform into rushing torrents that completely change the landscape within a few hours.
