Anshupa Lake, Ramsar wetland in Cuttack district, India

Anshupa Lake is a crescent-shaped freshwater body in Cuttack district, formed by an ancient bend in the Mahanadi River that was cut off over time. The water is surrounded by marshy banks that support fish breeding grounds and serve as a stopover for birds traveling between regions.

The lake came into being when the Mahanadi River shifted its course, abandoning its old curve which gradually became isolated as a separate body of water. An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Balarama once stood where the water now lies, and locals say its foundations resurface when water levels drop.

Fishing communities have lived along these shores for generations, and you can see their nets and boats dotting the water throughout the day. This connection to the lake shapes their seasonal rhythms and daily routines.

Visit early in the morning when the light is soft and the water is calm, and bring sturdy shoes since the paths around the shore can be uneven and muddy. The wetland environment means insects are present, so wearing light, covered clothing helps you stay comfortable throughout your visit.

Thousands of migratory birds stop here during their seasonal journeys, including cranes, storks, and ducks that make the water alive with activity during peak months. The sheer number of birds visiting simultaneously makes it one of the region's best spots for wildlife watching if you time your visit right.
