Bonal Bird Sanctuary, Animal sanctuary in Yadgir district, India.
Bonal Bird Sanctuary is an animal sanctuary in Yadgir district, Karnataka, India, built around an old water tank. The site consists of shallow ponds, scrub vegetation, and open grasslands that together provide habitat for a range of bird species throughout the year.
The water tank at the heart of the sanctuary was built in the 17th century, originally for irrigation. In 1998, the Forest Department took over management from the Fisheries Department, shifting the focus toward wildlife protection.
Local bird watchers and nature lovers visit mainly in the cooler months, when migratory water birds gather around the ponds. The open terrain makes spotting birds straightforward, even for first-time visitors.
The sanctuary lies west of Shorapur and is best reached by car, with parking available on site. Very few services are nearby, so it is worth bringing water and food before you arrive.
The bar-headed goose, regularly seen here, is known for crossing the Himalayas during migration, flying at altitudes that few other birds can reach. Spotting one at this low-lying water tank makes for a striking contrast with the high passes it travels through.
