Daringbadi, Hill station in Kandhamal district, India.
Daringbadi is a settlement in Kandhamal district in Odisha, India, set among forested hills at 914 meters (2,999 feet) above sea level. The roads wind through dense forests of pine and eucalyptus, passing terraced fields and small villages of stone houses.
British officer Daring Sahib managed the administration of this area during colonial times and founded the settlement under his name. British officials later established plantations to encourage economic activity in the mountains.
The coffee plantations across the hills grow under shade trees that local smallholders tend and process using traditional methods. Villagers from surrounding settlements sell dried spices and medicinal herbs at small markets along the roads.
Several bus stops connect the settlement with Bhubaneswar in roughly six hours of travel over winding mountain roads. The winter months from December to February suit a visit best, when temperatures drop and occasional fog rolls over the hills.
Odisha occasionally experiences light snowfall at this elevation during the coldest days in January, which is rare in this eastern state. The white flakes rarely linger long but sometimes cover roads and rooftops for a few hours.
