Darna Dam, Gravity dam in Igatpuri, India
Darna Dam is a concrete gravity dam built across the Darna River, close to the town of Igatpuri in Maharashtra state. The reservoir it forms is known as Lake Beale and serves as a water source for the Nashik region.
The dam was built in 1916 under British colonial rule as part of efforts to improve water supply across the region. It is one of the older water infrastructure projects still in operation in Maharashtra.
The dam plays a central role in local farming life, as the water it stores feeds irrigation channels that run through the surrounding countryside. During the monsoon, the sight of water spilling over the structure draws visitors from nearby villages.
The dam sits close to Igatpuri and can be reached by road from Nashik. The best time to visit is during or just after the monsoon season, when the water level rises and the spillway becomes active.
Lake Beale, the reservoir behind the dam, has gradually become a habitat for local bird and fish species over the decades. It is one of the few reliable water bodies in the area during dry periods, which makes it a gathering spot for wildlife.
