Malkangiri district, Administrative district in Southern division, India
Malkangiri district spans across 5,791 square kilometers of land featuring dense forests, hills, and rivers in the southwestern part of Odisha state.
The district evolved from being part of Koraput under Madras Presidency before 1936 to becoming an independent administrative region in October 1992.
The population includes numerous tribal communities who maintain their traditional practices, languages, and ceremonies throughout the seven administrative blocks.
The district headquarters in Malkangiri town coordinates activities across twelve police stations divided between Malkangiri and Chitrakonda police subdivisions.
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj designated this region among India's 250 most backward districts, enabling special funding for development programs.
