Dudhwa Tiger Reserve

Dudhwa Tiger Reserve is a protected area in northern Uttar Pradesh that spans grasslands, swamps, and dense forests along the Nepal border. The landscape contains different habitats that support a range of wildlife species.

The area was first established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1968 to protect endangered barasingha deer. In 1987, it became an official tiger reserve as part of Project Tiger.

The Tharu communities living near the reserve blend traditional ways with active participation in conservation efforts by sharing their local knowledge with protection programs. They play a key role in the daily work to preserve the wildlife here.

The best time for wildlife viewing is from November to February when temperatures are mild and vegetation is low enough for good visibility. Visitors should prepare for long drives and periods of waiting to see animals in their natural surroundings.

The reserve is home to a notable population of rhinoceroses that were relocated from Assam in 1984, establishing a new presence in the north. This was an important milestone in bringing back this rare species to a region where it had disappeared long ago.
