Sharda Barrage, Hydraulic barrage in Lakhimpur Kheri district, India.
Sharda Barrage is a dam built across the Sharda River in Lakhimpur Kheri district, northern India, designed to control and redirect the river's flow. From its base, a network of canals carries water outward into the surrounding farmland.
Work on the barrage started in the early 1960s and was completed in 1975 as part of a government irrigation project. It was one of several large infrastructure efforts in northern India aimed at expanding farmland after independence.
The canal network fed by this barrage shapes the daily rhythm of farming villages across the surrounding plains. Walking near the structure, you can see how the flow of water organizes the fields and the work of the people who tend them.
The site is in a rural area reachable by road, but there are few facilities nearby, so it helps to bring what you need for the visit. The dry season generally offers better conditions for seeing the structure and the canals clearly.
The feeder channel on the right bank of this barrage is one of the longest of its kind in India. Its length was planned deliberately to reach farming areas that no other water source could serve.
