Malabar Hill, Residential district in Mumbai, India

Malabar Hill is a residential neighborhood in the Mumbai City district of Maharashtra and sits on a peninsula between the harbor and the Arabian Sea. The area rises about 50 meters above sea level and offers views over the surrounding neighborhoods and water.

Mountstuart Elphinstone built the first residential structure here while serving as Governor of Bombay from 1819 to 1827. Over the following decades the neighborhood developed into a preferred residence for government officials and wealthy families.

The name means Pepper Hill and refers to the trees that once grew along the slopes of this residential area. Local residents often walk through the neighborhood to reach the temples and water tank that form the spiritual center of daily life.

The neighborhood is accessible by local transportation and lies near several bus lines that connect to other parts of Mumbai. Many streets run uphill so comfortable footwear is recommended.

The Banganga Tank is an ancient water reservoir surrounded by traditional buildings and temple structures. Locals still use the tank today for religious rituals and bathing.
