Royal Opera House, Opera house in South Mumbai, India
The Royal Opera House is a theater and cinema building in South Mumbai with three floors of carved stonework and decorated balconies. The building combines European architectural forms with Indian craftsmanship throughout the interior.
The theater opened in 1912 under British colonial rule and ran performances until 1993 without interruption. After a full restoration, the building resumed operations in 2016.
The name reflects royal connections from colonial times and remains in use today. Visitors see the main auditorium with its gilded decorations and chandeliers when attending performances or joining guided tours.
The building holds 574 seats across several levels, with the ground floor accessible for wheelchair users. Modern audio and video equipment supports different types of performances throughout the year.
This building is the only working opera house in the country, still showing original ceiling paintings and baroque details from 1912. The restoration preserved many of the original materials and techniques from the construction period.
