Janbazar is a neighborhood in central Kolkata spanning two wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, with a mix of residential buildings and commercial shops. Along its main streets, older houses stand beside modern stores, while side lanes feature market stalls and small workshops that shape daily life.
The neighborhood was shaped by the construction of a mansion by Pritaram Das in the early 19th century, which took several years to complete and later became connected to the family of Rani Rashmoni. It then developed into a significant residential area for merchants and artisans settling in Kolkata.
The neighborhood takes its name from a traditional market that has operated in the area for generations. Residents and visitors move through its streets daily for shopping and social encounters, giving the quarter its distinctive character.
