An Armenian merchant named Coja Petrus Uscan funded the construction of the original bridge crossing the Adyar River in 1728. The structure was renamed decades later to honor Tamil writer Maraimalai Adigal and his cultural contributions.
The bridge displays a trilingual plaque in Armenian, Latin, and Persian at its northern end. These inscriptions reflect the diverse cultural backgrounds of those who shaped early Chennai infrastructure.
The bridge is located near Saidapet bus stand and handles thousands of commuters daily. Expect heavy traffic during rush hours in the morning and evening when traveling across it.
The bridge was originally called by a different name derived from the nearby Mambalam village. This designation was later changed to create a lasting connection with an important figure in Tamil literary history.
