Maraimalai Adigal Bridge, Road bridge over Adyar River in Chennai, India
The Maraimalai Adigal Bridge stretches across the Adyar River on Anna Salai, connecting the northern and southern sections of Chennai through multiple traffic lanes.
Armenian merchant Coja Petrus Uscan funded the construction of the original Marmalong Bridge in 1728, investing one lakh rupees to establish the first crossing over the Adyar River.
The bridge displays a trilingual plaque in Armenian, Latin, and Persian at its northern end, preserving the multicultural heritage of early Chennai infrastructure development.
Located near the Saidapet bus stand, the bridge serves as a central transportation artery for thousands of daily commuters traveling between Chennai's northern and southern districts.
The structure received its current name in 1966 to honor Tamil writer Maraimalai Adigal, replacing the previous Marmalong designation derived from the nearby Mambalam village.
