Pathiramanal, Lake island in Vembanad Lake, Kerala, India
Pathiramanal is a 28-hectare island sitting in the center of Vembanad Lake, ringed by sandy shores and thick vegetation. The place draws many bird species throughout the year, creating a natural habitat within the water.
The island was under private ownership by the Thaimattathil Family until Kerala's land reforms in the 1970s shifted control to the state. This change opened the island to public access and conservation efforts.
The name comes from Malayalam and means 'sands of night,' rooted in local language and the island's natural character. Walking here, you notice how the local community values this place as a living landscape shaped by water and seasons.
Boats depart regularly from the Muhamma jetty, roughly 1.5 kilometers away, making it the quickest way to reach the island. You can also join backwater cruises from Alappuzha if you prefer a longer journey with more stops along the way.
Over 140 bird species find shelter on this island, including rare migrants like pintail ducks and stork-billed kingfishers that appear seasonally. Birdwatchers return at different times of year hoping to spot something they have never seen before.
