Prithvi Theatre, Theatre building and performing arts center in Juhu, Mumbai, India
Prithvi Theatre is a round performance venue with 200 seats in the Juhu neighborhood of Mumbai, India. The circular design brings audiences close to the stage, allowing every viewer to experience actors from just a few rows away.
Shashi Kapoor and his wife Jennifer Kendal Kapoor opened the building in 1978 as a permanent home for theatre arts in Mumbai. They created it to preserve the legacy of Prithviraj Kapoor's traveling company, which had toured across India.
The name Prithvi means earth in Hindi and honors actor Prithviraj Kapoor, whose family runs the venue. Visitors gather at the small cafe on the grounds before shows, where actors and audience share chai and discuss plays together.
The venue remains closed on Mondays and opens for afternoon and evening shows on other days. Visitors should arrive early, as entry is not permitted once a performance has started.
Tabla virtuoso Ustad Zakir Hussain plays here every year without loudspeakers or amplification. The natural acoustics of the round hall carry every stroke of his instrument to the back row.
