Pulichinthala Project, Hydroelectric dam in Bellamkonda, India
Pulichinthala Project is a hydroelectric dam built across the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh. The structure uses turbines to convert flowing water into electricity while creating a large reservoir for water storage.
The dam was conceived in the 2000s as a hydroelectric scheme and began operations in 2013. Since then it has provided electricity and water supply to the surrounding region.
The dam carries the name of civil engineer Kanuri Lakshmana Rao and supplies water to four coastal districts in Andhra Pradesh through connected irrigation canals.
Visitors can walk around the dam area and watch water flowing through the gates, which is most dramatic during rainy season when water levels are high. Bring sun protection and wear sturdy footwear as paths near the water can be exposed and uneven.
The dam uses specialized turbines designed to handle the seasonal flow variations of the Krishna River efficiently. This engineering approach allows it to generate power consistently despite changes in water availability throughout the year.
