Sonari Airport, airport in India
Sonari Airport is a small airport in Jamshedpur, India, handling domestic commercial flights and located near the city center. The terminal is functional in design with a short runway that accommodates only smaller aircraft.
The airport was founded in 1940 by the Tata Group and served as a small regional hub for decades. After years of operation by various airlines, it closed but was reactivated in 2023 with renewed service to Kolkata and Bhubaneswar.
Arrivals and departures concentrate in early morning and late afternoon hours, making navigation straightforward. Security and check-in move quickly due to modest passenger volume, and taxis or auto-rickshaws wait outside for rides into the city.
The airport remained closed for many years before reopening in 2023 with budget airline services from IndiaOne Air. A much larger airport project is being planned at nearby Dhalbhumgarh to expand capacity for future growth.
