Swaraj Bhavan

Swaraj Bhavan is a museum housed in a colonial-era mansion featuring spacious rooms, tall windows, and intricate architectural details spread across two floors. The structure sits amid surrounding gardens that complement its historical setting.

The building was constructed in 1899 as the residence of Motilal Nehru and later became the headquarters of the Indian National Congress in 1930. This transformation reflected the family's deepening involvement in the nation's political movement.

The museum displays personal belongings and photographs from the Nehru family, showing how they lived and worked toward India's independence. Visitors walk through rooms filled with objects that reveal the everyday life of this influential household.

The museum is located near Civil Lines and welcomes visitors daily except Mondays. Guided tours are available in several languages to help you understand what you see.

Indira Gandhi, India's first female Prime Minister, was born within these walls when it was still called Anand Bhavan. The name change to Swaraj Bhavan later marked a shift in the building's role and significance.
