Allahabad Pillar, Sandstone pillar of Ashoka in Allahabad Fort, India.
The pillar stands 35 feet tall with a diameter of 35 inches at its base, featuring multiple inscriptions in Sanskrit and other languages.
Emperor Ashoka erected this pillar in the 3rd century BCE, followed by additional inscriptions from Gupta emperor Samudragupta in the 4th century CE.
The pillar represents different periods of Indian governance through inscriptions from Mauryan, Gupta, and Mughal dynasties, each adding their historical records.
Visitors need special permission from Indian Army authorities to access the pillar, as it is located within the restricted area of Allahabad Fort.
The pillar contains the Prayag Prashasti inscription, which details Samudragupta's military conquests and helped scholars decipher the ancient Brahmi script.
