New Yamuna Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Prayagraj, India
New Yamuna Bridge is a modern cable-stayed structure spanning the Yamuna in Prayagraj, carrying multiple lanes of motorized traffic. The construction features concrete pylons and a steel deck held by parallel cables.
Construction began in the late 1990s to handle growing traffic between city districts. Completion came in 2004 after several years of work by Indian and international engineers.
The crossing brings pilgrims and locals directly to the sacred riverbanks visited by millions during Kumbh Mela. Staircases lead down to the ghats on both sides, where people bathe and perform daily rituals.
Pedestrians and cyclists use separate paths along the sides, while the central section is reserved for vehicles. During heavy monsoon rains, traffic can slow down, so early morning or evening hours are often better.
The steel cables together weigh several hundred tons and are regularly checked for corrosion and tension. On windy days, you can feel the slight movement of the deck, a normal feature of this type of structure.
