Samaspur Sanctuary, Bird sanctuary in Raebareli district, India
Samaspur Sanctuary is a wetland reserve spread across six linked lakes covering approximately 800 hectares, providing habitats for both resident and migratory water birds. The combination of shallow water zones, reed beds, and open water creates diverse conditions for different bird species to breed and rest.
The wetland was formally protected by the government in 1987 to safeguard water birds and their habitats. In 2019, it gained recognition as a Ramsar site, acknowledging its importance for the international wetland community.
Local communities maintain a close relationship with this place, relying on resources from the wetlands for agricultural needs and traditional practices. This bond shapes how people in the region view and use the landscape around them.
The best time to visit is during the migratory season from October to March when the most birds are present. Come early in the morning with comfortable footwear, as trails can be muddy and walking is the main way to explore.
The site is home to a significant portion of South Asia's population of a rare diving duck during winter months, making it a critical gathering point for this species. Birders from around the region come here specifically to observe these birds in their seasonal habitat.
