Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary, Dolphin sanctuary in Bhagalpur, India
The Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary extends across 60 kilometers of the Ganges River, from Sultanganj to Kahalgaon in Bihar state.
The sanctuary received official protection status in 1991 to safeguard the population of Gangetic dolphins, which declined significantly during the 20th century.
Local residents refer to the Gangetic dolphins as Soons and participate in conservation programs to protect these endangered freshwater mammals.
Visitors can access the sanctuary through Bhagalpur Junction railway station and take guided boat tours between October and June for dolphin watching.
The sanctuary contains approximately 200 Gangetic dolphins, which navigate using sonar abilities due to their natural visual impairment.
