Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary

Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary is a protected river stretch along the Ganges that extends from Sultanganj to Kahalgaon in Bihar. This section of the river serves as a habitat where these rare freshwater dolphins live in their natural environment.

The sanctuary received official protection status in 1991 after dolphin numbers had dropped significantly throughout the previous century. This designation marked the start of focused conservation efforts to prevent the species from disappearing.

Local people call the Gangetic dolphins "Soons" and have long shared the river with these animals as part of their everyday life. The dolphins hold a special place in the community's connection to the river and its natural rhythms.

The easiest way to reach the sanctuary is through Bhagalpur Junction railway station, from which guided boat tours can be arranged. The best time to visit is between October and June when water conditions are most favorable for viewing.

These dolphins have developed a remarkable ability to navigate almost entirely by echolocation because they are naturally nearly blind. This adaptation allows them to move and find food with ease despite the river's murky waters.
