Munger Ganga Bridge, Rail and road bridge in Munger, India
Munger Ganga Bridge is a combined rail and road crossing over the Ganges River in Bihar, linking two major national highways through a multi-kilometer structure. The bridge connects Bakhtiyarpur on the north bank with Tajpur on the south bank, carrying both trains and vehicles across the wide river.
The crossing opened for freight trains in March 2016 and began carrying passengers the following month. Its construction marked a major infrastructure project that directly linked northern and southern Bihar with a fixed crossing over the Ganges for the first time.
The bridge bears the name Shri Krishna Setu, reflecting the regional reverence for the Hindu deity Krishna in the state of Bihar.
Vehicles use the upper roadway while trains run on separate tracks below, allowing both forms of traffic to cross simultaneously. Travelers by train see the wide river landscape and long stretches of the bridge structure during the crossing.
The crossing is also called Shri Krishna Setu, a name heard often in the region. The structure uses nearly thirty identical steel truss sections that repeat across the entire length of the river.
