Ashokdham Temple, Hindu temple in Lakhisarai district, India.
Ashokdham Temple is a Hindu temple in Lakhisarai district, in the state of Bihar, India. The grounds hold several shrines dedicated to Shiva, Parvati, Nandi, and Durga, connected by walking paths across the complex.
In 1977, two children playing on the site found a large Shivlingam buried underground, and this discovery led to the construction of the temple. Since then, the complex has grown around that original finding.
During Maha Shivratri, pilgrims travel from many parts of India to pray and walk around the shrines in a ritual circuit. On those nights, the temple fills with people in traditional dress carrying flowers and offerings.
The temple has a dharmshala where pilgrims and visitors can stay overnight during their visit. Wearing modest, covered clothing is expected, and it is worth learning a few local customs before you arrive.
In 2018, workers digging near a pond on the temple grounds uncovered an ancient Vishnu idol. This find suggests the site was used for worship long before the modern temple came to exist.
