Ponnani lighthouse

Ponnani lighthouse is a white and black striped tower with twelve sides, rising roughly 30 meters above the shoreline. The structure includes a balcony platform and light chamber at the top that shine across the water at night.

The first lighthouse installation appeared in 1937 as a simple steel pole and was reinforced with a steel frame in 1948. The current tower replaced these older structures when it was built in 1983.

The lighthouse marks the river confluence where maritime traditions have shaped local life for generations. It remains a landmark in the everyday awareness of people living along this coast.

The site sits along an active shoreline where water and tides play a constant role in the surroundings. Visitors should prepare for salt-laden air and changing weather that are typical of coastal locations.

The structure operates with a special direct drive system that is uncommon in many coastal light installations. This technical approach allows the tower to function reliably even when weather conditions at sea become difficult.
