Ratle Hydroelectric Plant, Hydroelectric power station in Kishtwar district, India

Description

Ratle Hydroelectric Plant is a hydroelectric power station currently under construction on the Chenab River in Kishtwar district, India. The facility features a concrete gravity dam that is 190 meters long and 133 meters high, paired with an underground powerhouse designed to accommodate several turbines for electricity generation.

History

The foundation stone for the power plant was laid in 2013 by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The construction has since experienced several delays and changes in contracting companies, which pushed the completion date further into the future.

Culture

The power station development sparked discussions between India and Pakistan regarding water resource management under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960.

Practical

The site lies in a remote area roughly 140 kilometers from Udhampur railway station, so plan for a longer journey to reach the location. Because construction is still ongoing, access remains restricted to authorized personnel and specialized visitors rather than general tourists.

Did you know?

Four intake tunnels channel water from the reservoir to two separate powerhouses, with the main turbines each designed to produce 205 megawatts of output. An additional smaller auxiliary turbine with a capacity of 30 megawatts is planned to support the overall facility operations.
